It offers a knowledge basis that gathers and transfers success stories and contains existing management and monitoring tools, good practices and lessons learned across Europe and worldwide about sustainable tourism practices in the protected areas.

Likewise, the handbook contains an analysis on current sustainability policies applied to tourism management inside protected areas in Europe, an inventory of existing planning, management and monitoring tools for a sustainable tourism and identification of successful case-studies worldwide. It also includes a report on the potential socio-economic benefits in applying a sustainable approach to tourism management in protected areas. Target groups and stakeholders were involved in data collection and in the survey on potential socio-economic benefits through questionnaires.
