Rijeka Local Info Day

The International Conference entitled "Adaptive Reuse of Cultural Heritage and Circular Economy" started on Wednesday, March 27th of 2019 in the City Hall of the City of Rijeka’s main building.

The conference was an integral part of the three-day activities in the CLIC - Circular Reusing Cultural Heritage Investment Models project, funded by the EU Horizon 2020 program.

The aim was to exchange experiences and knowledge on three main topics of the CLIC project:

  • Adaptive re-use of cultural heritage – what is the meaning of adaptive reuse, what are the conditions for conducting proper re-use, how is the concept of customizable reuse integrated into the notion of conservation and how do we differentiate adaptive reuse from restoration and conservation.
  • The circular economy in urban development – what is circular economy and how it relates to the construction sector with a special focus on the maintenance and preservation of cultural heritage, which are the main links and areas of application of the circular economy in the construction sector, which are successful stories in the application of the circular economy on cultural heritage.
  • Historical urban landscape and sustainability - what we mean when we talk about the historic urban landscape, how the concept developed in the international debate and how we evaluate it in terms of conservation, given that preservation is a real challenge for the historic urban landscape. In addition, how the concept of the historic urban landscape is linked to the circular economy, preservation of cultural heritage and adaptive reuse.

At the conference, European and Croatian experts exchanged experiences in the field of cultural heritage management, and through participation in a workshop that was held on March 28th, 2019. and contribute to the creation of guidelines for overcoming the existing cultural, social, economic, institutional, legal, regulatory and administrative obstacles to the systematic re-use of cultural heritage.

On Wednesday the Forget Heritage team presented the project. The focus was mainly on the ReUse center, considering the thematic of the conference. The presentation lasted for about 20 minutes and the reactions were very positive. Participants were interested. Our ReUse presentation had a lot of common points with Ljubljana’s Snaga presentation (public company - the largest Slovenian company for managing municipal waste).
