World Wildlife Day: Forests and Livelihoods

3rd March 2021

Today, on 3rd of March, we celebrate World Wildlife Day! This celebration was created to commemorate signing of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in 1973. Today we celebrate it to raise awareness of the wild animals and plants that cohabit our planet and make it such a wonderful place. This year’s theme for the celebration is “Forests and Livelihoods: Sustaining People and Planet”.

Empowering beech forest communities

The BEECH POWER project aligns exactly to this year’s theme. The project aims to improve the management quality and effectiveness of the World Heritage Beech Forests. In addition, it aims to safeguard the ecosystem integrity of the component parts by improving capacities and active participation of relevant stakeholders. We are active on different administrative levels to anchor sustainable regional development and to produce replicable and innovative tools that support World Heritage Beech Forests and their local surroundings. The results of the project will support protected area management and local communities in their daily work to protect the last old-growth beech forests of Europe.
