The EU has agreed to ban throw-away plastics
Officials from EU agreed, that throw-away plastic items such as straws or polystyrene cups will be banned in the European Union by 2021.
Representatives of 28 EU countries agreed on a list of 10 single-use plastic products with readily available alternatives will be banned.
The list includes items such as plates, straws, cotton buds, sticks for balloon or drink stirrers, made of expanded polystyrene. For other products, such as food containers and drink cups, the focus will be on limiting their use. And for the plastic bottles, they will have to have at least 30 percent recycled content by 2030.
The EU recycles only a quarter of the 25 millon tonnes of plastic waste it produces per year.
