Star hike around the Preber Lake at UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Salzburger Lungau

Lungau, August 28th - the guide and star expert Othmar Ortner showed the participants of the star hike the magical world of the night.

On August 28, 2019, the star hike with Biosphere reserve guide and star expert Othmar Ortner took place. He took the participants into the magical world of the night, explained constellations and told a lot of interesting facts about light pollution and what it means for people and the environment.

Light pollution is nowadays one of the main reasons why there are fewer and fewer places to admire the starry sky in its full beauty. The area around Prebersee is one of them. As part of the CEETO Interreg Central Europe project, the management of the Biosphere Reserve Salzburger Lungau focuses on preventive visitor guidance through awareness raising and knowledge transfer. It is important to optimize existing ways, but also to find new ways in which tourism and the protection of nature can be reconciled. The area around the Prebersee plays an essential role for this end.

Light pollution not only causes that we can’t admire the stars it their full beauty, but has far-reaching effects. It also means loss of energy, because radiated light into space is lost light. Incorrect lighting enhances this effect and has many negative effects. Light pollution has a negative effect on the chronobiology of humans and nature. It interferes with our sleeping patterns and thus leads to increased stress, it influences migratory birds and contributes to insect dying, to name only a few aspects. Proper lighting, on the other hand, can help protect the night sky and our biodiversity.
