Functional Urban Area – FUA

Piezometric Fua of Milan

In many European cities, groundwater is contaminated due to extensive brownfield areas and contaminated sites located in city cores as well as in the hinterlands. Groundwater quality is affected by these contaminated sources, which spread the pollution beyond administrative borders. This requires an effective intervention on a medium scale. Functional urban area (FUA) is a functional economical unit covering both urban area and hinterlands. This definition provides a spatial delimitation beyond administrative borders, which is relevant for environment, i.e. groundwater quality. Therefore, a FUA in AMIIGA project is delineated according to the hydrogeological criteria, i.e. considering a catchment area and an extension of contamination with possible downstream influence.
