AMIIGA project manager talks of the first meeting of the Regional Implementation Group in Katowice

Central Mining Institute, lead partner of AMIIGA, organized the first meeting of the Regional Implementation Group in the framework of integrated groundwater management plan on the supra-local scale on 8th of June 2017. We interviewed Dr Grzegorz Gzyl, project manager of AMIIGA.

Dr Gzyl, what is a RIG?
RIG stands for Regional Implementation Group. RIGs are local groups of stakeholders set up in all the regions that participate in AMIIGA, also here in Silesia Region.

What was the purpose of the meeting?
The purpose was to agree on the scope and capacity to acquire the necessary data to develop a groundwater management plan, it will be a tool for decision support and sustainable planning in the area of contaminated groundwater in our functional urban area.

Who attended the meeting?
The meeting was attended by representatives of institutions responsible for the management of groundwater and surface water in the region, as well as AMIIGA project partners - GIG and Jaworzno City Council and representative of Metropolitan Association of Upper Silesia (GZM), associated partner of AMIIGA project.

What did you discussed during the meeting?
The following topics were discussed during the meeting:
 - Assumptions of the groundwater management plan and the role of the Regional Implementation Group.

 - AMIIGA’s understanding of functional urban area - definition, coverage, current state of water quality, remedial actions taken so far, problems and strengths.

 - The shortage of the current groundwater management model, including the types of necessary data to be acquired
