Pilot Action 3 Updates: Milan

The area interested by the Pilot is located North-West of Milan. It comprises part of Milan and 11 municipalities North of the boundary of the city and was selected considering the presence of some plumes of chlorinated solvents.

Within AMIIGA, the drilling of 6 new piezometers has been foreseen, to optimize the existing groundwater network, and three monitoring campaigns will be executed in order to survey the extension of plumes (PCE, TCE, TCM, cis-DCE, vinyl chloride, methane, sulphates, iron cations, manganese, nitrates, dissolved oxygen) and support their numerical transport modelling. In addition, three CSIA analyses will help to distinguish plumes from diffuse contamination.

The results of these activities will improve the modelling, that is also part of AMIIGA, and thus to better distinguish diffuse pollution from those of punctual sources (plumes).

Both the position of the new piezometers and the choice of the monitoring network have been discussed with the support of Regional Implementation Group for the diffuse pollution during the first year of AMIIGA project.

The first four piezometers were realized between December 2017 and January 2018, while the last two will be realized by the mid-June. Moreover, the first monitoring campaign was realized between December 2017 and February 2018. It regarded the expected 30 monitoring points and further 16 additional points to thicken the spatial distribution of the data. The second monitoring campaign is ongoing and will concern 30 points.
