Albenga and Saint Martin Day

11/12/2017

For the first time since the beginning of project activities, a public event was organised by the Municipality of Albenga, in cooperation with the International Centre of Ligurian Studies and the Diocese of Albenga-Imperia, to celebrate Saint Martin and raise awareness on the project among the large public. Last 11th and 12th of November, the city of Albenga honoured Saint Martin within the framework of a two days event celebrating autumn and its typical products: chestnuts and wine.

A conference dedicated to St. Martin (‘San Martino. Un Santo ad Albenga’) took place Saturday the 11th of November in the afternoon. The two speakers – Giorgio Barbaria and Josepha Costa Restagno from the International Centre of Ligurian Studies – illustrated St. Martin’s biography, his hermitage in Albenga (Gallinara Island) and the tangible cultural heritage linked to Saint Martin in the Albenga area. More than 30 people attended the event, and this will for sure contributing to raise the awareness of the general public on the NewPilgrimAge project and its overall objectives.

A solemn mass was also celebrated on the 12th of November in one of the ancient churches of the Old Town, Santa Maria in Fontibus, to honour the spiritual legacy of St. Martin of Tours.

With the organisation of the first Local Stakeholders Platform Workshop on the 25th of November, the NewPilgrimAge project will start the pro-active involvement of the community in the development of a long-term strategy in the name of St. Martin, and will thus concretely launch its activities on the territory.
