News from PPs: Historic Result at BCT – Baltic Container Terminal in Gdynia

Good news from one of the project partners of the COMODALCE consortium: this result is the basis for the pilot project in Gdynia, which will further enhance the positive trend of handling operations

Today, BCT – Bałtycki Terminal Kontenerowy Sp. z o.o. [Baltic Container Terminal, Limited Liability Company] in Gdynia exceeded the level of 500,000 TEU of annual handling operations for the first time in its history. This record was attained thanks to excellent cooperation with shipowners and shippers benefiting from BCT services for years.

This year, the BCT celebrates the 40th round anniversary of its activities as well. Opened in 1979 it was the sole container “window on the world” for Polish economy for many years. During its long-term container operations in Gdynia, the terminal handled more than 9.3 million TEU in total.

After the Gdynia terminal was taken over by ICTSI in 2003 – an international operator of container terminals and supported by investments, it became one of the biggest Polish container terminals.  These multiannual operations enabled it to achieve a breakthrough outcome in 2019 – handling of 500,000 TEU.

“Within the forty-year-long history of the BCT in Gdynia and the 17-year-long presence of the ICTSI at the terminal, several times we neared to 0.5 million TEU handled per annum,” said Wojciech Szymulewicz, President of the BCT “However, actually not earlier than in this year we exceeded this figure that is magic for us. It must be emphasised that we are a gate terminal for cargoes intended almost exclusively for Polish economy. Therefore, the achieved result is all the more satisfying to us. We would like to thank our customers very much, who entrust us with their cargoes, appreciating the BCT’s work.

We believe that thanks to new port investments in the future we will manage to activate ocean connections, which will considerably contribute to next records,” emphasised the BCT President.

The half-million TEU was loaded in export onto the MSC Veronique vessel , owned by the largest client of the terminal, MSC - Mediterranean Shipping Company.
