Arable land as a CO2 storage facility

Mid of August a study started in Pfaffenhofen to use arable land as a CO2 storage facility. The aim of the three-year study is to make agricultural operations more climate-friendly. The soil contains humus, of which one third consists of CO2. If the amount of humus in the soil is increased, the amount of stored CO2 also increases. If the study is successful, CO2 certificates can be issued to the farmers and encourage them to make their work more eco friendly. In the first year each soil of the participants are tested and analysed regarding their composition and how much CO2 could be bound in the ground.
