Glassmaking - THE TRENČÍN REGION, SLOVAKIA

Glassmaking workshops were founded in regions with sufficient raw basis, situated particularly in forest areas (due to the need of wood, which was necessary for the production of glass and glass items). What is the most typical for the Trenčín region as a whole, is the link of glassmaking history (extinct important glassmaking workshops in Uhrovec or Valaská Belá - Gápel) with present glassmaking, not only in the field of research, protection, presentation and documentation of techniques of old masters (glassmaking open-air museum in Valaská Belá or Slovak glass museum in Lednické Rovne), but also in glass mass production, mainly made for an export to the foreign clients (glass factories in Lednické Rovne or Nemšová). Another aspect of glassmaking tradition in the Trenčín region is a number of projects of the Trenčín University of Alexander Dubček in Trenčín, aimed at development of the glass of new generation with broad use possibilities.

The University is a partner of scientific conferences or other activities (f.e. The History of Glass). Small glass tables were used in folk art in the past. Glass paintings, mainly with sacral motives (f.e. Our Lady of Sorrows), are preserved in the collections of the Trenčín Museum in Trenčín.
