Intercultural garden in Z-Bau North Garden

Pilot site: Z-Bau North Garden

The project of the revitalization of the Z-Bau Nordgarten started right now with the implementation of an intercultural community garden.

The team of the garden invested money and manpower in basic infrastructural changes, that consist electric lightning system, watering system, electricity system, technical equipment in tools and furniture for gardening. The heart of the garden is the Aquaponik project. There were DIY work sessions on roof building, seats, platforms, paths, sheds and caravan, greenhouse and garden beds. There is one weekly garden meeting for volunteers and garden enthusiasts. Partys, concerts and other little cultural events already happened.

So, the place is changing from urban wasteland into a place to be and begins to be an important brick for the socio cultural center Z-Bau. The team tries to create an open and integrational atmosphere which is necessary to handle the place with its dark history. The building which is surrounding the garden is a former military kasern. Originally built by the National Socialists as a barracks, it was used later by the Americans as a base until the last soldier left the so-called Merrell Barracks. Now, this story behind the walls itself is not articulated in the garden concept, but there are always these thick walls, little windows and the unpleasant military atmosphere in the back when the team tries to create an open minded project.
