STREFOWA (Strategies to Reduce and Manage Food Waste in Central Europa) was a three-year project that
encouraged cooperation shared challenges in central Europe. Nine partners in five different
Central Europe Countries (Austria, Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, Italy) were working together. The aim
was to reduce food waste or to treat it in a better, more useful way as well as to connect relevant actors in order
to achieve a reduction of environmental impacts (e.g. GHG emissions) along the whole supply chain.

Multi-language STREFOWA Tool

During the project duration all known initiatives to reducefoodwaste in Central Europe were added to the tool. New initiatives can be added and searched by country, type, initiator and many more. The tool is available in English, German,Hungarian, Italian, Polish and Czech. Find more.

Food Hack Manual

In 5 countries, we dedicated one weekend to come up with ideas for apps or websites. Concepts ranged from food sharing to apps helping to waste less, shop wiser and store food better. Based on our experience we distilled a manual so that anyone can organize a hackathon in their city.

STREFOWA aims to reduce and management food waste in Central Europe. The participating countries are Austria, Czech Republic, Italy, Hungary and Poland. Together we report the current knowledge on food waste amounts in the five selected countries as well as the quantities of food waste that are prevented by the currently existing best practices in food waste prevention activities/initiatives. Environmental Savings

All pilot actions achieved a potential saving in greenhouse gas emissions as well as other environmental impact categories assessed within the scope of this study, like PA 4 saved 12 600 t CO2.

PILOT ACTIONS

on Reuse of food

These pilot actions encourage reuse of food surplus. For example by collecting food surplus from SPAR customers or by establishing an alternative market for food from farmers.
