Quality of plums from the Myjava Region was known already in the era of Austria-Hungary, when local farmers exported them even to imperial Vienna.Time-consuming cooking of sweet plum jam was a domain of women, while production this popular strong alcoholic beverage – legendary slivovica (plum gin) – was linked mainly with men. Both products were of a high importance for traditional society, although they were preferred on different occasions.

The basis for production of a plum jam as well as plum gin (slivovica) were traditional varieties of plums, mainly Bystrica plum („bystrička“), which is sometimes replaced by other varieties in the present. It´s not surprising that slivovica from the Bošáca and Myjava Regions belong to Slovak alcoholic beverages of top quality.
