A key part of the project is the pilot application of novel energy saving technologies in public transport infrastructure, being „first-of-its-kind” in Central Europe ranging from renewable energy integration into metro stations (Vienna) and trolley depots (Gdynia) to upgrade a substation for multipurpose use of existing public transport infrastructure (Maribor) and new buffer storage technologies (Pilsen).

Vienna

A new, foil-based photovoltaic system is being tested on the roof of a Vienna metro station at the Ottakring metro station by Wiener Linien within the Interreg EfficienCE project. The generated green energy is up to 10% of the metro-station’s monthly energy demand in Spring and Summer months. On the strongest days, the PV system can supply up to 50% of the station’s energy need.

Wiener Linien prepared three videos about the implementation:

  • the first-time installation of special photovoltaic films,
  • the features of the implemented PV system and
  • the braking energy system.

Gdynia

An energy storage inverter has been designed and constructed by PKT (trolleybus operator in Gdynia) within the EfficienCE project, which is a device for processing excess braking energy and traction power. It allows for capturing excess energy generated by the braking of trolleybuses from the grid, and for the management of this energy.

Pilsen

The Pilsen City Transport Company (PMDP) has launched a series of tests of a battery buffer storage station at the final station of trolleybus line 16. This interesting technology will fit the dimensions of a small shipping container, and one such is located just off the stream at Sídliště Bory. The charging station has no power supply from CEZ's external network, it is connected only to the trolleybus overhead wires from which its battery is continuously charged, and under load it is able to quickly supply a larger amount of energy back to the trolleybuses. The main function of the station is to strengthen places with insufficient power supply.

Maribor

The Municipality of Maribor is developing solutions for energy-efficient public transport by planning electrification of the bus fleet. The EfficienCE project enabled the municipality to start with implementing fast-charging stations at the main bus station and at the end of bus route 6, which is the busiest bus line. In the framework of the EfficienCE project, the city administration carried out a public procurement procedure for the purchase and installation of two pantographs for the fast-charging of e-buses.
