Tourist flows in Protected Areas: the Inventory of Best and Most Innovative Monitoring Methods
Federparchi, the Italian Federation of Parks and Nature Reserves-EUROPARC Italy, produced the Inventory of Best and Most Innovative Monitoring Methods, a key document that collects the state of the art of tourist monitoring techniques in Europe.
CEETO Project, Central Europe Eco-Tourism: tools for nature protection, has come to the heart of the activities with the development of the inventory of the best and most innovative methods of monitoring tourist flows in Protected Areas. The action implemented by Federparchi was presented and discussed with the project partners at the technical meeting held in Budapest in March 12th to 14th.

The inventory presents planning, management and monitoring tools and success stories on sustainable tourism learned from the experiences of different Protected Areas in Europe. The methodologies identified are a mix of well-consolidated techniques that have been in use for many years together with innovative methods, which are increasingly gaining importance and credibility. By doing so it is possible to present a complete overview of tools, able to adapt to the needs of each Protected Area. All monitoring activities will be held according to privacy laws.

The analysis of the different techniques starts from the strengths and weaknesses of each methodology, based on the aspects that distinguish them, reporting the practical and useful aspects for the purposes of the choice in relation to the specific needs of each Protected Area.

This inventory is primarily addressed to the partners of CEETO Project. However, it is also intended to serve managers of Protected Areas, either local and regional managers, national public entities and competent agencies and their stakeholders such as NGOs, research centres, universities or SMEs that might be interested in the interconnection between environment conservation and sustainable tourism strategies development.
The Handbook to be published in the framework of CEETO project will contain a collection of the aforementioned methodologies together with good practices been implemented in Europe using these monitoring techniques. The release of the Handbook will be announced in CEETO website and social media, stay tuned.
