UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Salzburger Lungau: Mountain-biking in harmony with nature
The mountain-bike trail in the Biosphere Reserve Salzburger Lungau makes not only biker’s heart miss a beat but also avoids conflicts and contributes to the preservation of nature through an adequate visitor steering.
Time for Mountain-biking is coming closer. The beauty of the natural landscape, nearly 60 mountain lakes and 70 managed huts of the Biosphere Reserve offers perfect conditions for unforgettable bike-experiences. The mountain-bike trail of the Salzburger Lungau with its 15 tours of different levels of difficulty and the exclusive cross-valley tour “Lungau EXTREM” makes the hart of every biker skip a beat!

The side-valleys of the Lungau are arranged radial like the spokes of a wheel and are waiting to be explored. The Mountain-bike-trail is about 500km and offers inspiring and challenging tours in healthy altitude air. The 15 tours of different level of difficulty are not only leading through the charming landscape but also across cultural-historical places like the Sanctuary St. Leonhard at Tamsweg or the Castle of Mauterndorf. The cross-valley tour “Lungau EXTREM” is about 158,5km long and the sum of the climbs is 6.145 meters.

To avoid conflicts and to protect nature and the habitat of the wildlife, a so-called biker-regulation is existing. This allows bikers in the period from the 1st of June until the 15th of September to use the marked trails between 9:00 am until 7pm at their own risk. Mountain-biking is only allowed on marked routes in a responsible regarding other users and in adequacy speed.
Signage and Mountain-bike Map. The map includes descriptions, maps and altitude profiles of all 15 tours and one for separate for the Lungau EXTREM. It is available for € 10, - in all tourism boards as well as in the Ferienregion Lungau.
