“MY GRANDFATHER’S HOUSE”
TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE MASTER-APPRENTICE TRAINING

In 2012, the Village Development Society led by András Krizsán, with the support of the Hungarian National Rural Network, developed the master apprentice training, »MY GRANDFATHER’S HOUSE« for high school students, college students and students interested in folk architecture. The objective of this programme is to make young people learn about the values of folk architecture, traditional house building techniques and mastery during summer practice. Summer training is open to apply every spring. The selected »ducklings« are placed next to a master and are involved in the renovation of a monumental building, a country cottage, a mill or a farmhouse. They do useful creative work to increase their knowledge, expand their professional knowledge, and gain direct experience of the folk methods of house building. During several weeks of practice, you can learn the basics of the old carpentry, the tricks of roofing, to master the preparation clay and straw mortar, in the traditional environment. Over the six years of the programme, more than 300 apprentices have been involved in the programmes held at 16 training locations.
