Accelerating excess heat utilization in Central Europe

4.4.2019

Ptuj, April 4, 2019 - The special event titled “Accelerating excess heat utilization in Central Europe”, at the International Conference of SZE 2019 on April 1st, has brought to the fore the outputs of the CE HEAT project that support the acceleration of waste heat recovery in EU regions.

As part of the development of the compressive model for waste heat utilization, the CE HEAT partnership developed a number of practical tools for improved governance and utilization of waste heat. These were tested through a range of pilot projects in policy and industry context and presented in-depth at this intrenational energy conference. The special session was attended by partcipants from 8 different EU countries.

Mrs. Anna Sappa from Energy Agency of Friuli Venezia Giulia, presented the GIS based waste heat cadaster, developed for several European regions. The cadastre outlines the waste heat potential and enables better planning of policies, supporting mechanism, supply and demand matching, as well as investment project identification. Furthermore, the presentation showed how data included in the cadaster can be used in Decision Support System, a tool that enables pre-feasibility analysis of waste heat project cases, where the relevant technologies for waste heat recovery are compared on the basis of environmental and financial parameters. In conclusion the use of tools and waste heat in the context of a malt production pilot project was presented.

Mr. Samo Fekonja from DEM (Dravske elektrarane Maribor), presented the waste heat cadaster for Slovenia and touched on the challenge of access to data for such initiatives and the need for improvement of national/ regional data collection, aggregation and data accessibility systems. In the following the presentation demonstrated the use of Waste Heat Energy Calculator, a tool that enables preliminary economic assessment and definition of viability of a given waste heat recovery project with key economic parameters. The tool is directed at investors looking for business opportunities in applying systems for waste heat utilization. Furthermore, the details of the pilot project of waste heat recovery at Fala hydropower plant for the heating of historic museum was discussed.

Mr. Anton Wetzel from Thuringian Energy and Cleantech Agency, has shown, as part of his presentation the integration of the waste heat action plan and Thuringian waste heat cadaster into the regional energy strategy and outlined the positive effects this has had on financial support mechanism for feasibility studies in key industry sectors. In the second part a number of CE HEAT pilot project in the region of Thuringia were presented, including feasibility studies, challenges and complexities in accelerating waste heat utilization in textile, wood and steel manufacturing industry.

In addition, we also hosted two presentations on waste heat recovery models and technologies conducted by experts from Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical engineering of University of Maribor.
