The beauty of the night

German metropolitan areas are growing constantly and getting brighter and brighter during the night. This excessive use of light restricts the view at the night sky and its stars. As an effect of “light pollution”, the stars become often invisible for the citizens. The demand for places, where the Milky Way and starry constellations are still visible is growing. For the purpose of a better view at the night sky, the so called Dark sky parks have been established. Dark sky parks like Westhavelland (Brandenburg), the National Park Eifel (North Rhine-Westphalia) and the Rhön Biosphere Reserve (Thuringia / Hesse / Bavaria) are recognised by the International Dark Sky Association. These parks are characterized by very low levels of light pollution resulting in a good visibility of the night sky. Favourable requirements to observe the night sky in the federal state of Mecklenburg- Vorpommern offers the Naturpark Nossentiner Schwinzer Heide, which is currently in process of recognition as a Dark Sky Park.
In cooperation with the park the Dynamic light team could test tools developed in the course of the project. As part of the "Dark Sky" project, students of the architecture and lighting design study program at Wismar University are developing innovative solutions for street lighting in New Poserin at night - this is how the light pollution is to be limited. Successful concepts will be considered as examples in the Manual on dynamic light and social need. The manual will be shortly available on the project website.
