The University of Silesia (US) is one of biggest universities in Poland. The scope of scientific research includes a number of basic research, applied and implementation research, conducted within the 23 disciplines including natural sciences, technical sciences, life sciences and social sciences. The University consists of 12 faculties. Over 30 000 students are educated in 150 specializations in more than 40 fields of study.
The University of Silesia employs up to 3400 employees. More than 2000 of them are lecturers and researchers. The researchers develop their scientific interests while working in modern laboratories (more than 130 labs equipped with specialized laboratory and research equipment). The researchers are especially interested in research and development. Each year the University of Silesia submits more than 25 cases investigation to the Polish Patent Office, most of which are approved, what makes UŚ a leader among non-technical universities in Poland.
In the last 5 years the University singed over 200 partnership agreements with entities and institutions with diverse business profiles. It also participates in a number of cluster initiatives, to increase the socio-economic competitiveness of the Silesia Region, and international organisations.
The University has been involved in a number of scientific and research projects granted under a.o. European Funds programme, European Science Foundation, Polish – Swiss Research Programme, Europe/Australia Comparison, EEA Grants and Norway Grants. It was a coordinator of “Integrated supporting system for management and protection of water reservoir – ZiZOZAP” project, realized under EU funds - Innovative Economy 2007-2013.
The role of the University of Silesia in the PROLINE – CE project is an Associated Partner to Silesian Waterworks. The University of Silesia provides the know-how as a tool for local industry and regionaladministration for supporting sustainability of water and land use.
