GOOD PRACTICES OF THE TRENČÍN REGION
RÍFOVÁ PÍŠŤALA (CUBIT PIPE)

THE PÚCHOV VALLEY, BRVNIŠTE & PAPRADNO MUNICIPALITIES

Cubit pipe is an archaic wind musical instrument, originally developed from primitive pipe with no holes. Its name was derived from an ancient unit of length („ríf“ - cubit), with a variable length from 70 to 90 cm (approximately 77 cm). Generally, pipes are connected with traditional shepherds’ culture of the north-western part of Slovakia. However, the unique way of production of cubit pipe comes from Brvnište and Papradno municipalities.

After chiselling of both halves, cubit pipe was wrapped by cherry tree or birch bark. Before the play, cubit pipe had to be soaked due to wood sinkage. In January 2019 the cubit pipe was recently inscribed on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Slovakia.
