In March 2022, shortly after the start of the Russian aggression against Ukraine, the European Commission announced a plan of
making Europe independent from Russian fossil fuels well before 2030.
Across central Europe, local and regional authorities are struggling with this transition. They often face similar challenges, so we have pooled together the best tools and tips from our projects that can help instantly to drive forward the transition towards clean energy.
You will find readily available and transferrable solutions that help regions and cities to become more energy-efficient and less dependent on fossil fuels. These include amongst other a toolkit on integrated financial instruments for energy efficient solutions, strategies and action plans for better energy planning, and smart solutions for introducing low emission zones.
Many more solutions exist and we are updating this page continuously to include additional information from our projects.
Clean Energy Transition
Many regions of central Europe are dependent on fossil fuels. To become climate-neutral, there is the need to completely transform their energy systems. Transnational cooperation can help to accelerate this transition.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY & RENEWABLES
An increase in the energy efficiency of our buildings etc. lowers greenhouse gas emissions and has clear economic benefits. Hand in hand with an active deployment of renewables, it is a crucial step towards decarbonisation.
How to be more energy-efficient
LOW-CARBON PLANNING
Improving territorially based strategies and policies for low-carbon energy planning support decarbonisation. The development of such strategies and policies are key to the low-carbon future of our cities and regions.
LOW-CARBON URBAN MOBILITY
With transport accounting for a third of our CO2 emissions, the transition towards greener urban mobility is vital for a more sustainable future. But let's not forget, most sustainable mobility needs sustainable energy.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Climate change is the biggest challenge of our times. And it is an opportunity to build a new economic model. The European Green Deal set the blueprint for this transformational change.
All 27 EU Member States committed to turning the EU into the first climate neutral continent by 2050. To get there, they pledged to reduce emissions by at least 55% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels.
To respond to the above challenges, with our new funding we will continue to encourage cooperation for greener Europe. In coming years, we will fund projects that address environmental challenges in central Europe and help increasing energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy. But also those that encourage sustainable urban mobility.
